A VIBRANT, RICH AUTUMN BOUQUET

About a month ago, we put together this baby for Häät magazine. We love wild, untamed bouquets - especially at this time of the year. To get the bouquet recipe, check out their newest issue!

A ROMANTIC VINTAGE WEDDING: JENNI & CALLE

Jenni was the first bride to contact us after we had established Hey Look last year. Already then she had a very clear picture of what she wanted their wedding to look like: vintage-playful, yet romantic and elegant with Finnish influences as well as American ones. Already at that point she had collected and made a bunch of decor stuff and over the course of the year more and more was added to the list. In the end, the bride and groom contributed two cars full of props, vases, votive glasses and other decor bits and pieces.

On saturday finally the big day had come! The wedding ceremony was held in Porvoo, the reception at Villa Haikko, a beautiful venue by the shore set in the Haikon Kartano park and forest surroundings. The perfect spot for Jenni's & Calle's vintage wedding.

We arrived with two cars full of own props & loads of flowers in the morning, the sun was shining from a bright blue sky. Jenni, Calle and some helpers were already setting up lanterns and signage in the yard of the venue. After the bride & groom headed to get ready for their wedding, we threw ourselves into making floral arrangements and styling the space. 7 hours later, we were ready and the place looked like this. A total of over 100 floral arrangements, more than 150 votive glasses and many many props.

Jenni had wanted her bouquet to be made of soft pink peonies and after some weeks of uncertainty, we did manage to grab the final peonies of the season, yay! The bridesmaid bouquets were made of cream colored florals on a bed of dusty miller greens. The boutonniere for Calle was made from a wee pink carnation, white florals and dusty miller.

The large backyard of Villa Haiko was lined by lanterns set up by Calle and the groomsmen. They also made and set up this lovely Happily Ever After sign. We decorated the steps on the entrance area with large floral arrangements, lanterns, other props and welcome chalkboard signage.

Guests found their seats on a seating chart drawn onto two old windows that the bride had brought to our studio weeks before the wedding. One of our favorite details was the memory shelf we set up from wooden boxes. It contained pictures of the bride & groom, wedding photos of their parents, the story of how Jenni & Calle met from each one's point of view and the very first baby shoes of the couple. What a sweet idea! We folded pages from old books to create the couple's initials and decorated the shelf with flowers, succulents and vintage doilies.

Instead of writing into a guest book, Jenni's and Calle's guests wrote wishes to the newlyweds on little tags and hung them onto a wish tree. Guests could also snap their own pictures in a "photobooth" decorated with old pictures of Jenni and Calle. For the gentlemen we set up a little cigar bar.

We also set up a dessert table with loads of yummies. Labels were made from simple recycled paper decorated with doilies or lace ribbon.

The dinner tables were lined with burlap table runners topped with vintage books, votive jars + loads of floral arrangements in jars and vintage tea and coffee cups. We decorated some of the jars with burlap and lace ribbon to match the votive glasses the bride had made beforehand. Each place was set with a menu card in a pocket folded napkin tied together with package string and a handwritten place card (the bride and her bridesmaids had folded and tied these the previous evening).

Thanks Jenni & Calle for letting us be such a big part in creating your big day! All the best for your start into the new life as a married couple. We're so happy for you!

AN INTIMATE WEDDING: ANNA & ANTTI

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to work with Anna & Antti, a lovely couple who decided to get married only a month earlier. While Lotta had to style a super-chic & modern wedding here in Helsinki, I headed to Järvenpää with my good friend and eager helper Jenni to spend a super-relaxed and lovely day styling and shooting the wedding of Anna & Antti at Vanhankylän Kartano.

Anna had wished for simple, casual florals, a little sweet buffet for their 30 guests and a few hours of photography to capture some details of the day. Her chosen color scheme was pink, blush, white, soft yellow and green which worked beautifully in the venue. We made simple floral centerpieces in glass jars to decorate the venue & dinner tables and set up a little sweets buffet in the same color scheme. I made Anna's bouquet from lush pink & white peonies and pink roses (a combo that always works, don't you think?).

The couple had got married the day before at the Maistraati (would translate to "city hall", probably) already, so they arrived before their guests for some picture taking time. Don't you love Anna's dress and shoes? She looked so radiant with her lovely baby bump!

Taking pictures of the couple, bridal party and the guests was such a breeze. Although the lighting for taking pics was horrible (that kind of before-the-storm weird light that turns everything a greenish-yellow), the couple's family and friends were such relaxed and friendly people that it was simply a great pleasure to be a little part of Anna's and Antti's big day. The staff at the venue too, was super-nice and helpful - so, if you're looking for a little intimate & casual yet festive wedding place around Järvenpää, please consider this one.

And here's a little something by the bride about Hey Look in Finnish:

"Heylookin stailaus ja kuvaus osuivat ihan nappiin. Meillä oli vain noin kuukausi aikaa järjestellä häitämme, mutta Heylookin avulla niistä tuli helposti sellaiset kuin olin toivonutkin :) Erityisesti
pidimme Michaelan todella ammattitaitoisista ja kauniista kuvista, jotka olivat JUURI sellaisia kuin toivoin. Suurkiitokset, suosittelen teitä ehdottomasti kaikille ystävilleni !"

Thanks, Anna for your sweet words!

Cheers,
Michaela

COLOR LOVES - SOFT PINK

Soft pink or blush is probably the most popular wedding color and very often used on its own or paired with whites and neutrals. By itself it creates a romantic, feminine look and it looks great in modern or rustic venues alike.

Images: peonies, macarons, ribbons, ruffle cake, bride & bridesmaids

This is one of our favorite color schemes: blushes & pale pinks combined with soft shades of mint. This palette works perfectly for a vintage inspired setting. Mix in some gold elements for an elegant vintage look or stick to bright whites for a more modern feel.

A very similar, but more quirky color palette: blush & pink + aqua tones. Perfect for a rustic or vintage wedding. Check out this lovely example of a 50's themed wedding on Ruffled.

Another favorite of ours: blush & gold. A super-sweet and feminine color combination. To create an elegant, classical, vintage-inspired feel, use ruffles, tulles, lush and flowing fabrics + rich floral arrangements. To get a more contemporary look, use clear lines, patterned fabrics (striped, chevron, etc)  and simple floral arrangements.

Blacks and dark grays add a bit of a dramatic feel to the blush color palette. Use this color palette for an elegant french inspired soiree or a classic wedding in a historical venue - be sure to check out the image sources for more inspiration

Blush, soft pink and red is such a sweet color palette perfect for weddings, bridal showers and girl's birthday parties. Despite it being a very classic & romantic color palette, you can create a very contemporary look by playing with shapes and materials (check out this inspiration shoot as a perfect example).

COLOR LOVES - NAVY

We love navy - it's elegant, understated and can be combined with almost any color. If you want to go for the pure navy look and not pair it with strong other colors, you can go for a combination of navy and white (nautical, simple, classic), navy and grays (elegant & classic) or add tones of browns, beiges and sand (natural, rustic but classy).

Navy gets a fresh look by combining it with aqua, teal and mint tones. Add some sandy shades & whites and you have the perfect color scheme for a beachy, summer wedding. If you want to go for a more fun and cheerful scheme, add pops of yellow to the palette - check out this shoot for inspiration. You could also combine the navy and aqua palette with shades of hot pink or coral for a preppy and modern look.

If you like it preppy, navy combined with pinks and blush tones might be your perfect color palette. Leave out hot pinks and go for only soft blush tones to get a more classy and elegant look. Add some striped patterned fabrics and you've got a beautiful but fun nautical theme. Another lovely preppy color scheme is navy + white + green - check out these bridesmaids' outfits for inspiration.

Images: ties, bridesmaid, wedding party, bouquet, place setting

Navy, yellow + white is a lovely scheme for a spring or summer wedding or party, especially an outdoor one. It's not overly preppy, yet fun. It's bright and cheerful, yet classical. You can also add some beige and sand tones to give it a little rustic touch.

Images: stationery, boutonniere, cakes, bride & bridesmaids, lemonade

Coral and peach tones work beautifully with navy. You can go for a fresh setting of coral, navy and whites or give it a bit of a rustic & natural feel by pairing the color with beige and browns. We particularly love this inspiration shoot combining the color combo with a setting and brown & gold tones.

COLOR LOVES - MINT

Today's color love feature is all about shades of mint and seafoam. It's such a versatile color that can be used in classical, cute and even preppy event designs. By itself mint is fresh and pretty, but chic at the same time. Pair it with lots of white for an extra fresh look.

[Images: mint building: Madden Photography, wedding cake: Martha Stewart Weddings, polka dot texture: Oilcloth, macarons: sfophoto on flickr, cupcakes: Sprinkle Bakes,  stationery: ]

If you want to go very classic, chic and elegant, pair off-shades of mint and seafoam with gold and neutral tones from cream over blush to beige and light brown. Add some very dark brown tones to give it a more masculin and dramatic touch.

This color palette works beautifully in either rustic environments like barns or in historical spaces with chandeliers, ornate ceilings and white walls.

For a feminine and pretty look, pair shades of bright mint with peach and blush tones. The color combo is perfect for romantic summer weddings, bridal and baby showers. Don't you love how light and airy these colors look together?

If you like it preppier, replace the peach shades with strong coral tones + black and white.
